People and Purpose (Sterning HR) partnered with an ASX-listed Infrastructure organisation to find them the best-in-class individual to lead their Industrial Relations team and strategy.
The Challenge
With over 40 enterprise agreements across multiple unions, this organisation required an experienced Industrial Relations leader skilled in negotiation, IR strategy, and operations. This needed to be coupled with the strong influencing capability for both internal and external stakeholders up to the board level.
They needed to form teams, connect with business leaders, and establish trust to support strategic goals and achieve successful outcomes for large-scale national projects with multi-million dollar budgets.
The previous incumbent left the business after six months for reasons beyond the company’s control. With several EAs up for negotiation and others potentially forthcoming, the next hire became crucial to the organisation’s viability.
The Solution
After thoroughly discussing the role’s reporting structure, identifying current skill gaps, and aligning with strategic objectives, we agreed that a direct search approach was most suitable. Given the role’s sensitivity, we opted not to advertise it publicly. Following consultation with the Chief People Officer, we conducted a comprehensive market map to identify suitable candidates and finalised a shortlist of individuals to approach.
The Results
Drawing on our extensive networks and experience in Human Resources, we curated a strong shortlist of candidates from reputable organisations. All possessed the necessary experience and showed a keen interest in the role, which aligned with their goals.
Following the selection process, we recruited an impressive individual who has significantly improved the organisation’s Employee Relations (ER) and Industrial Relations (IR) functions. Which has positioned the business well to secure future projects, retain top talent, and further develop an already engaged and productive workforce.
